On July 18, 2024, the Burundi Episcopal Area of the United Methodist Church held significant bishop nominations. The esteemed candidates for the position were Rev. Lazare Bankurunaze and Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Sinzohagera. The process of voting and nominations was overseen by a committee headed by Rev. David Muwaya, with the Bishop of the East Africa Episcopal Area also in attendance, underscoring the importance of this event.

The Annual Conference, attended by nearly 800 congregants, served as the backdrop for this pivotal moment in the church’s history. Before the voting commenced, both candidates were given the opportunity to briefly campaign, addressing the gathered congregation to present their visions and commitments.

Despite logistical challenges, including a scarcity of fuel that prevented Rev. Lazare Bankurunaze from visiting all 11 districts within the Episcopal Area, both candidates managed to engage with various church communities prior to the nomination day.

The voting concluded with Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Sinzohagera winning the nominations with a significant majority, receiving 576 ballots. Rev. Lazare Bankurunaze garnered 202 votes, while three ballots were categorized as spoiled.

The day’s proceedings were solemnly concluded with a memorial service, paying tribute to those who have passed on, creating a moment of reflection and remembrance amidst the electoral activities.

The Annual Conference continues, with the final sessions set to conclude on Saturday, July 20, 2024. This extended gathering provides a platform for continued dialogue, spiritual renewal, and communal decision-making within the Burundi Episcopal Area.

The outcome of these nominations holds significant implications for the future direction and leadership of the United Methodist Church in Burundi, marking a transformative period for its congregants and wider community.
